Melrose Place

7:30pm Wednesday, February 17 on C4

An updated version of the popular 1990s series, Melrose Place tells the story of a diverse group of 20-somethings living in an elegant Spanish-style apartment complex in the trendy Melrose neighbourhood of Los Angeles.

Tonight: The remake kicks off as wide-eyed Oregon transplant Violet Foster (Ashlee Simpson-Wentz) arrives in L.A. to find a dead body floating in the courtyard pool at 4616 Melrose Place.

Following in the footsteps of 92010, Aaron Spelling’s soap Melrose Place has been revived with a fresh new cast including Ashlee Simpson, Katie Cassidy (David Cassidy’s daughter from Supernatural and Harper’s Island), Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield) as well as bringing back Laura Leighton to play Sydney Andrews and Thomas Calabro as Dr. Michael Mancini.

The pilot kicks off a murder mystery arc complete with flashbacks which will last half a season.

Here’s the first eight minutes of the pilot:

Ahhh…. don’t those first few minutes bring back memories?  The familiar apartment complex, the pool, those rounded doorways, the balcony… and of course the beautiful people living it up large, full of love and hate.  An iphone makes a nice product placement and there’s some odd references to Tarantino and Lord of the Rings.

I’m hooked enough to watch more.  Besides, I want to know if Ashlee Simpson is a better actor than her big sister and if Katie Cassidy is going to sing on the show!

Reviews have been mixed so far, with critics reserving their judgment on the fate of the show.  2.3 million viewers tuned in, slightly less than 90210’s second season debut.
