Commentary

Heather du Plessis-Allen’s story was cut short leaving her hanging, seemingly wondering if her planned script was going to make sense any more.

Tim Wilson suggested that Newt Ginrich’s comebacks made Lazarus look like an amateur.  

We’ve been having some interesting discussions about the timing of the Maori Party / National coalition dramas.  Is this an actual issue or something manufactured just in time for Waitangi Day?  It would be highly surprising to me if the coalition fell apart so early after agreement was reached, especially when it is in both parties’ interests to work it out.  Time will tell but I suspect there will eventually be some compromises made and deals done that keeps everyone happy and all this speculation about the government falling over will all come to nothing.

Commentary

Only 2 stories were in common tonight.  The Zion Wildlife Park sale lead 3 News but it was just outside the Top 5 on One News.  One News coverage by Kate Lynch also uncovered background details of the buyers and their history with Craig Busch.

Tony Field provided speculation as to who might replace Rob Fyfe as CEO of Air New Zealand.  One of them was Christopher Luxon who Field claimed managed 1.4 million staff when he was CEO at Unilever Canada.  Canada has a population of 34 million so that figure is unlikely.  When we take a look at the Unilver Canada website, they state that at the end of 2010 they had 167,000 staff.

The first two stories were the same on both channels tonight with the new government observer keeping an eye on the Christchurch City Council the only other story in common.

Of the remaining stories it is arguable as to which were more newsworthy.

Commentary

It was a strange start to the news hour tonight.  One News lead with the soldier who collapsed during a trial for the SAS before the trans-tasman meeting in Melbourne.  Sarah Batley then backtracked on last night’s news that foreigners were going to be buying up more rural real estate when in fact the buyers are kiwi, possibly a superannuation fund.  

Peter Whittall is setting up a new company that is going to do consulting for the mining industry, a move that has offended families whose relatives are still buried in the mine at Pike River.

And apparently the H is still missing from Wanganui.

On 3 News, the trans-tasman story was the lead before two breaking news stories.

The treaty settlement story was actually on One News last night.

It was a tough call tonight.  The breaking news stories were cancelled out by the treaty story that was on One News yesterday. Despite the correction that there were no foreigners involved in the purchase of the Dairy Holdings company we cannot award the win to 3 News.

Further on in the bulletins, both networks covered a topless protest.  One News had the breasts blurred out while 3 News aired the flesh without any censoring or warning.

One News lead with news that another, bigger farm is about to be sold to foreigners.  

The amount of time it is going to takt to recover the Pike River bodies and the ongoing developments with the Australia Day protests and John Key meeting with Julia Gillard were the only other stories in common.

Commentary

The Crafar farms sale approval to Chinese company Shanghai Pengxin was the big story of the day and lead both networks.  

The public seem quite opposed to the sale of New Zealand land to foreigners, Chinese or otherwise.  It is a little ironic that the subsidiary that would own the farms is called “Milk New Zealand”. 

The other big story was the ongoing drama with the Christchurch City Council and Tony Maryatt’s payrise.

Commentary

There were no stories in common tonight.

One News lead with the eviction of the Occupy Auckland protesters before offering the terrifying scenario of a Ports of Auckland expansion.  Considering they’re bleeding customers, is this a real threat at the moment?

Then it was the actual story of the day.  The release of the teapot tapes on the internet.  Ironically, the story overshadowed the Prime Minister’s State of the Nation address which One News ran next.

The problems with the Christchurch City Council and the speculation that Tony Maryatt might decline his payrise rounded out the Top 5 on One.

3 News lead with the news that the police dug up the floor of a house in a murder cold case and found nothing.  Kind of pointless to send a reporter to do a live cross from Kawerau where there literally was nothing happening.

The cynic in me suggests that the Fijian floods made second place because 3 News had flown Tony Reid up there. 

The drama in Papua New Guinea made the next two stories before we got to see Julia Gillard thrown into a car not once, not twice, not even three but four times.  

My other observations from 3 News tonight were that after making such a fuss over the teapot tapes during the election, it wasn’t until the 7th story that it got a mention.  Obviously they saw the Prime Minister’s State of the Nation address as more important as it was in place six which is probably the way that it should have been but I’m a little surprised that the ordering was the way that it was on both networks.

Commentary

TVNZ added a second sex sting to their bow this week, this time joining the police in Christchurch to crack down on prostitution happening close to residential areas.  

Anyone who owns an unreinforced masonry building in New Zealand will be watching the latest developments closely and will no doubt be asking who will be footing the $2b bill for the upgrades.

Kim Dotcom’s bail decision was released this morning, as the Judge said would happen on 3 News on Monday.  This was the only story that was shared by both networks.  3 News lead with weather, whales and concerns over the Norwegian adventurer who is presumed to be on his way back to Antarctica.

Commentary

It was the cost of milk and the regulation of Fonterra on One News vs the start of the political year on 3 News with the political parties trying to woo the Maori vote from Ratana.  The Fonterra story was number 5 on 3 News.

The follow up story on last night’s Close Up underage sex sting added that a law change is coming that will enable police to prosecute despite there not actually being a minor involved.

Rachel Morton’s exclusive about the Department of Labour’s resposnsibility for safety at Pike River and choosing not to charge themselves will no doubt raise some eyebrows.  The royal commissions findings on that will certainly be interesting.

Commentary

An identical Top 5 from both networks tonight.  Of the two, 3 News had details of 3 police officers who, according to Occupy Auckland protesters, had identical badges -Z557.  When quizzed by Jane Luscombe, the officer in charge sidesteped the question.  Police are now investigating.

In the MegaUpload story, One News told us that because the judge had deferred the bail decision, Kim Dotcom would have another night behind bars.  3 News told us it was two days.  On the story on 3 News, the judge stated that Dotcom would be remanded until the decision on Wednesday morning.  

There was a protester trying to get in shot on both channels during the live crosses to Aotea Square with a sign that read “Media Lies!”.  He managed to stand with the majority of the sign behind Donna-Marie Lever’s head on One News but managed to make it readable on 3 News.

One News also revealed their new, spruced up look tonight.  We’ll post images later.
