TV ONE’s new series Person Of Interest continues, with Emmy Award-winner Michael Emerson (Lost) starring as Finch, an eccentric billionaire and designer of a covert surveillance system ‘The Machine’, which uses Social Security numbers to prevent violent crimes. Teaming up with a presumed dead ex-CIA agent, Reese, the pair set about solving the mysteries of impending crimes people will be involved in.

Tonight, when the number comes up on a promising young doctor, Megan Tillman (Linda Cardellini, ER), Reese and Finch must unravel the threat while she’s on-call and after hours.

Emmy Award-winner Michael Emerson (Lost) stars in TV ONE’s new series Person of Interest, a thought-provoking criminal drama about an eccentric billionaire who partners with an ex-CIA agent to prevent violent crimes.

Emerson plays Finchy, a billionaire whose unlimited assets allow him to continue a surveillance project he invented for the US Government.

Even though he is longer employed by the state, Finch still receives the Social Security numbers of individuals who have been singled out by security footage as likely participants in impending violent crimes.

Whether these persons of interest are potential victims or criminals is up to Finch and his sidekick, mysterious former agent Reese (Jim Caviezel The Prisoner) to find out.

Tapping into the world’s Big Brother-like surveillance network, the shadowy duo knows that something bad is going to happen; it’s their mission to discover what that event will be … and somehow prevent it.

Operating on a parallel track are New York detectives Carter (Taraji Henson, Hustle and Flow) and the corrupt Fusco (Kevin Chapman Hawthorne), who must enforce the law while still abiding by it. Running counterpoint to Reese’s unconventional yet effective methods, Carter strives not only to collar criminals, but the evasive Reese as well.

TVNZ launched their 2012 season tonight at the Viaduct Events Centre.  As per the invitation, it was very much a Pan Am themed event (Not Pam Am as the TVNZ press release stated).  While the girls who greeted everyone at the door and eventually directed everyone to their seats were dressed in the blue garb of the aviation icon, they lacked the true poise and sophistication that is displayed throughout the new series.

After an hour of plying the hundreds of advertisers with alcohol we were invited to board flight 2012.  First up, TVNZ’s head of Sales and Marketing pimped the network’s channels and how successful they’d been.  Special mention was made of all their social streams and how people should visit them to see how people are interacting with them, although, perhaps not the Coronation Street one.

Of all the shows screening on TV One in 2012, there were six that were made special mention of.  They were:

Pan Am (Thomas Schlamme – The West Wing)

Alcatraz (JJ Abrams)

Titanic (From the writers of Downton Abbey)

Person of Interest (JJ Abrams and Jonathan Nolan – Tha Dark Knight)

Unforgettable

Prime Suspect

New local shows include High Country Reserve, Radar’s Pacific, the Phil Keoghan hosted Wild at Heart and Jacqui Brown’s new show Keep Calm and Carry On.  There’s also a local version of World’s Strictest Parents on the way.

Despite promoting it last year, TVNZ have decided to wait for the second season of Episodes before they screen the first one.  I would suggest buying a copy but it’s not out on DVD until the 28th of February in the US.

For those who loved Gyspy Weddings, wait until you see Seven Dwarves!

Another to look out for is the HBO series Enlightened although I’m not sure if it’ll be screening first on SoHo.

I Shouldn’t Be Alive

Weeds close to renewal

Weeds is said to be close to receiving an eighth season renewal by the Showtime network. It was previously believed that the seventh season would be the last for the comedy-drama.

J.J. Abrams series picked up

The new J.J. Abrams-written drama series Person of Interest has been given a full season order by CBS in the US. The series follows a billionaire who develops a programme with the ability to identify people connected to future violent crimes.

Reality shows limited in China

Reality shows like Keeping Up with the Kardashians may be banned in China in a move to take back “control over cultural industries that are fuelling more independent viewpoints”. The country is planning on limiting reality TV shows and light entertainment shows on satellite TV, staring from next year.

Glee actor returning

Part-time Glee actor Jonathan Groff will return to the series in its current third season, reprising his role of Jesse St. James.

A new pilot from Lost creator J.J. Abrams has been greenlit by CBS.

The project, Person of Interest,  is the brainchild of both Abrams and screenwriter Jonah Nolan, brother of Dark Knight and Inception director Christopher Nolan.

Details about the pilot are fairly limited but Entertainment Weekly understands that it centres on a CIA officer who is presumed dead working on a secret project for a reclusive billionaire.
