More gay characters on TV says research

Research is suggesting that the number of gay or bisexual characters appearing on Primetime television is on the up, with comedy shows like Modern Family paving the way. The figure breaks down to around 23 gay characters out of every 600 roles.

Tina Fey to be honoured with comedy award

30 Rock and Saturday Night Live star Tina Fey will be honoured at the ceremony for the Mark Twain Prize for American Humour by fellow performers Betty White, Jimmy Fallon and Jon Hamm of Mad Men and among others from Saturday Night Live. Fey is only the third woman to win the award, following Whoopi Goldberg and Lily Tomlin.

Heroes actor to guest on The Office

Ex-Heroes actor Jack Coleman will make a guest appearance on an upcoming episode of The Office where he will play a government official. Coleman will also appear in an episode of The Mentalist in the show’s next season.

Ramsay responds to suicide of contestant

Gordon Ramsay has responded to the news that an ex-contestant on his show Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares took his own life recently by saying: “I was fortunate to spend time with Joe during the first season of Kitchen Nightmares. Joe was a brilliant chef, and our thoughts go out to his family, friends and staff.”

Alcatraz series picked up by Fox

J.J. Abrams new project revolving around the island prison of Alcatraz has been picked up by Fox, who will produce a pilot for the series. The series is described as “a show about mysteries, secrets and the most infamous prison of all time: Alcatraz”.

Lost actor joins Criminal Minds

Former Lost actor Sterling Beaumon will guest star on an upcoming episode of Criminal Minds. The 15-year-old, who played the young Benjamin Linus in Lost, will feature in the crime procedural as a young boy who is suspected of murdering his family.

SNL star to guest on The Middle

Saturday Night Live’s Norm MacDonald will appear on the second season of The Middle, in the comedy’s Thanksgiving episode. MacDonald will play Mike’s (Neill Flynn) brother in the episode.

The Australians are up in arms over a new advertisement for the upcoming NBL basketball season which is allegedly racist towards African Americans. Take a look for yourself.

Matt Newton quits The X Factor

Underbelly actor Matt Newton has been forced to withdraw as host of the upcoming X Factor Australia after being readmitted to rehab in Melbourne. The actor, who featured on the second season of Underbelly, has had a history of drug and alcohol related problems.

The Stig unmasked?

Newspapers in the UK are reporting that the identity of The Stig from BBC’s Top Gear programme has been uncovered thanks to information garnered from a set of company accounts. The driver is said to be ex-Formula Three racer Ben Collins whose company made significantly more money after providing “driving services for the BBC, mainly in the Top Gear programme”.

Michael J. Fox returning to TV

Michael J. Fox will return to television in the next season of The Good Wife with reports the actor will play a lawyer on the drama series. Fox, who has been battling with Parkinson’s Disease for two decades, semi retired from acting back in 2000 and this will mark his first full time role since then.

Betty White wins Emmy

88-year-old Betty White has picked up an Emmy at the Creative Arts Emmy ceremony over the weekend, a precursor to the Primetime Emmys which take place at the end of the month. Other winners include Neil Patrick Harris for his guest role on Glee, Jeff Probst for his hosting of Survivor and Jamie Oliver for his series Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. 

Terra Nova to shoot in Queensland

Queensland has won out as the location for Steven Spielberg to shoot his next big-budget TV series, the dinosaur drama Terra Nova. Australia’s tropical North-East will once again play host to Spielberg’s production team after the director successfully shot The Pacific in the same Australian state several years ago.

Jane Lynch to host SNL

Jane Lynch from Glee will take on the hosting role on an episode of Saturday Night Live this month. The comedian, who is no stranger to improv, will host one of the few episodes of the series’ 36th season.

Temuera Morrison joins Spartacus

Temuera Morrison has joined the cast of Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, the sequel series to the upcoming Spartacus: Blood on Sand which starts of the Box this month. Morrison will take on the role of Doctore, trainer of the gladiators.

MTV drops Teen Wolf details

The producers behind the new MTV remake of Teen Wolf have announce details of the new series, saying they are placing emphasis on the battle between hunters and werewolves. The remake will attempt to differentiate itself from the likes of Twilight and The Vampire Diaries and want its wolves to be “kissable”.
