Detective Constable Rachel Bailey is 30, down-to-earth, noisy, argumentative and single. Detective Constable Janet Scott is 46, a diplomat and a thinker, and wife and mother to two teenage girls. They both work for Manchester Metropolitan Police’s prestigious Murder Investigation Team and, despite the obvious differences between them, the fact that they are often thrown together in difficult situations means they have developed a robust friendship. Each episode sees Rachel and Janet face a serious crime that is both challenging and emotionally difficult as well as cope with their own complex personal lives.

Tonight, when adult movie star Vicky Birkinshaw is arrested on suspicion of murdering her husband, Rachel and Janet investigate the couple’s involvement in home-made pornography. Meanwhile, Gill worries that Rachel’s relationship with Nick might have endangered a case, and Janet’s affair is uncovered.

A thrilling investigative drama, Scott and Bailey explores the personal and professional lives of two female detectives, played by Lesley Sharp and Suranne Jones. In tonight’s episode, Gill is determined to pin additional rape charges on Georgios Stelikos, already in the docks for murder, but everyone else thinks she’s crazy – as rape charges are the hardest to prove in a court of law. Rachel and Janet are asked to give evidence, and when they go to court Rachel discovers that her ex-lover, Nick Savage, is the defending barrister. Stelikos is found not guilty of the rape of Hannah Conway… but he is later discovered dead. The number one suspect is Conway, who made threats against him after giving evidence in court.

In tonight’s episode, a mother is brutally raped and left to bleed to death in the boot of her car. During house-to-house investigations, Rachel inadvertently identifies a suspect who tries to resist her arrest. After a teenage murderer is charged, horrific events begin to unravel following the arrest. Also in tonight’s episode, Rachel tells Nick that she is pregnant, then agonises over whether to have an abortion. DCI Gill Murray agrees to allow Janet to work on the Veronica Hastings murder, and puts her in touch with the original SIO, who is more than happy to discuss the case.
