Nigel Slater presents a nostalgic celebration of well-loved Christmas dishes, past and present. From a sea bass starter to a roast duck feast and a dazzling party trifle, Nigel demonstrates how special dishes can be made simply, especially when it comes to feeding family and friends over Christmas. Nigel also prepares some winter warmers, inspired by his own festive memories and gives his dad’s annual contribution – the Christmas casserole – a tasty makeover. Plus, there is a bold and bright winter slaw inspired by the Slater festive cheeseboard. Finally, an invitation to a venison supper in a Scottish castle completes the celebrations and gives Nigel a great excuse to create a new cocktail to toast Christmas and the New Year.

Having seen how his Spanish friends prepare for the festivities in their own homes both in Spain and the UK, Rick cooks for a special Christmas party in London to share the dishes that have inspired him most and complement the Spanish love of celebrations.

He’s decorated the bay leaf tree with fairy lights, harvested the sprouts from the vegetable garden and his Gloucester Old Spot pig is now a festive ham. Top of his Christmas list is a goose, and he heads off to admire Dave Roache’s gaggle and discuss the merits of goose keeping. Once he’s paid for his goose, he starts on his Three Ways with a Christmas Goose, making stuffed goose neck, confit from the legs and leaving the breast to be roasted on the day.

Restaurant critic Giles Coren and writer and performer Sue Perkins spend the week on the diet of a wealthy Victorian couple. Cooking for them at home is best selling cookery writer Sophie Grigson. As Giles dons top hat and waxed moustache, Sue dresses up in tight corset and outrageously wide skirts. During the week, they visit the Natural History Museum to try the food of Charles Darwin’s Glutton Club, attend a tea where they try and raise the spirits of the dead and find out what Oliver Twist and the poor really ate. The week culminates with a traditional Victorian Christmas complete with a giant pie as enjoyed by Queen Victoria herself.

It’s a night of pure entertainment as Rod is joined on stage by some of his famous friends. Michael Buble, Mary J. Blige and Cee-Lo Green drop in to help Rod spread some Christmas cheer, and the legendary Ella Fitzgerald makes a virtual appearance.
