Last weekend’s Super Bowl XLVI match between New York and New England has officially become the most-watched TV programme in US history with 111.3 million viewers tuning in.

New drama series picked up

The ABC network in the US has picked up a new drama series called Bunheads that centres on a Las Vegas showgirl who ends up moving to a small town after getting married impulsively. Former Flight of the Conchords actress Sutton Foster will play the lead role.

Yesterday’s Super Bowl has just been confirmed as the most-watched program in US television history, beating last year’s match by around 4.5 million viewers.

111 million US viewers tuned in yesterday to see the Green Bay Packers defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers, a total that surpasses the previous TV audience record of 106.5m.

Not surprisingly the list of the most-watched TV programs in the US is dominated by the Super Bowl, which claims 8 of the top 10 places.

The only scripted shows to make the list are the finale of M*A*S*H in 1983 which pulled 106m viewers and the 100-minute finale special of Cheers in 1993 which was viewed by 93.1m.
