The kiwi woman who spoke to Jon Stewart before his comedic jab at NZ politics on his show this week says she was trying to educate the host.

Wellingtonian Christine Brooks, who is in the US as part of a three-month OE, says she spoke to the host of the Daily Show during the Q & A session before filming began about the upcoming election.

”I was very earnest – I was trying to educate him – but I don’t think he had much of an idea about what was going on,” she said.

”He fully acknowledged that he knew more about what was happening in Iceland than he did in New Zealand.”

”We had a bit of back and forth. He was obviously interested in the question. He was asking about how politics operates here.”

Stewart poked fun at NZ and its government during his opening monologue, saying: ”Obviously the top story tonight, New Zealand politics.I had a half hour conversation before this show with a lady about New Zealand politics, and it was so intricate and there were so many things going on.”

Brooks says she was surprised at the coverage the clip received here in NZ.

”There’s an irony in all this. Jon Stewart was taking a stab at New Zealand for talking about not much, then we’re all ‘Oh my God, he talked about us’.”
