Love Christmas? Scammers do too. It’s a time when people are at their most vulnerable. The streets are packed, everyone is looking to buy something and pockets are filled with cash and credit cards. From the hustler’s point of view it’s like shooting fish in a barrel. This is why Christmas is also the season that local authorities, the police and consumer groups go to great lengths to make people aware of the scam artists that want to take their hard earned cash. Tonight the Real Hustle team (pictured) take us through the most devious scams perpetrated at Christmas. They play the scams out on the public, reveal how they work and how to protect yourself.

the BOX – Saturday 22 May, 11pm

Most New Yorkers think they could never be duped into falling for a con, but this series proves we are all at risk. The hustlers – expert pickpocket and king of cons, Apollo, sleight of hand and psychology specialist, Ryan and irresistible queen of distraction, Dani – carry out some of the most notorious scams around on unsuspecting members of the public so that viewers can learn how to avoid being taken in themselves.

8:00pm – Monday, April 5 on TV 3

“Most crooks would say ‘Put your hands in the air!’ We say ‘Put your hands in your pocket…,” says Andre King when asked to explain his new series The Real Hustle NZ, screening on Monday, April 5th at 8pm on 3.

Filmed with hidden cameras, The Real Hustle NZ features teams of hustlers from the UK, the US, and New Zealand, including King, as they try out some notorious scams on members of the public.

“You may consider yourself fairly au fait with how the world works,” King explains. “However the fact of the matter is that confidence tricksters and scam artists are professionals in their field.”

“They (we) have studied everything from body language, reading facial cues and ticks, to nuero linguistic programming and misdirection until it is a finely honed craft.”

“Then that craft is employed in the most underhanded and cunning ways, with one goal in mind – to separate a mark from their money.”

King continues, saying that it’s the people who believe that they will never be taken advantage of who are the easiest targets.

“People may find themselves sitting in their lounges, sipping their tea, watching the people we’ve taken down and be thinking to themselves; ‘ahhh… they wouldn’t have caught ME with that…,” he explains.

“This is great for scam artists, in a strange dichotomy; the more firmly you believe you can’t be caught out, the easier it is to get you,” he continues. “If you accept that you can be fooled, you’re more aware that you may be being fooled.”

“But if you believe you can’t be, that thought doesn’t even enter the realms of possibility and you can therefore be caught out faster.”

King says he hopes The Real Hustle NZ will help New Zealanders overcome this ignorance, as well as expose some of the most notorious scams out there today.

“I hope that with the introduction of this show to the NZ populace, it will highlight the fact that anyone, anywhere can be caught out,” he says. “That, for me is the main reason I agreed to be part of the show.”

So if you think you’re too smart for cheap cons, think again, and make sure to tune into The Real Hustle NZ when it continues its action-packed first season on Monday, April 5th at 8pm on 3.

The participants featured in The Real Hustle NZ have been set up by their family, friends or workmates, and like many New Zealanders they believe they are too smart to be conned.

Hi, just recently I watched an episode of Dragon’s Den UK late one night but forgot what day it was, I’ve tried searching on TVNZ but can’t find anything about it.

And I watched The Real Hustle a few weeks ago on what I remember to be Prime. I saw it on two consecutive days late in the night. And have also tried searching the Prime website and can’t find anything about it either.

If anyone could tell me when these two shows are running, that would be great.
