Hearts will break and life in Mystic Falls will never be the same after tonight’s dramatic season finale of The Vampire Diaries.

Determined to protect his sister, Jeremy (Steven R McQueen) makes a decision that will change everything. In the harsh reality of the present situation, Elena (Nina Debrov) longs for simpler times when her parents, Grayson (Jason MacDonald) and Miranda (Erin Beute), and Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning) were still alive and her biggest concern was her relationship with Matt (Zach Roerig).

Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) leave Mystic Falls together on a mission, but soon split up when Elena needs one of them. Meanwhile, Caroline (Candice Accola) and Tyler (Michael Trevino) are forced to make a life-changing decision.

Finally, Bonnie (Kat Graham) makes a secret deal that has heart-breaking consequences.

The episode also explores in detail the miserable scene in which Elena’s parents were killed. Debrov explained to the American TV Guide how gruelling the scene was to shoot.

“It’s something I will hopefully never have to survive I real life – trying to survive under water while trying to save other people.”

The underwater shoot distressed the starlet despite her experience as a scuba diver.

“It was quite intense and a little scary. I’m used to [being] underwater with a tank, but having to act without the tank is completely different. We were in the water two days [in a row] for eight hours a day. By the end, I was so exhausted I slept like a baby.”

Damon is surprised to learn the reason why Sage has returned, and pleased when she devises an unusual method to help him figure out what Rebekah is up to.

The Pandora’s Box of secrets is wedged open tonight in the Vampire Diaries, revealing some dark and violent truths.

Step inside the history of Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and the Original Family, as Klaus’ motives for wanting Stefan (Paul Wesley) on his side are finally revealed. As Stefan sinks deeper into the dark side, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Debrov) struggle with the guilt of their growing bond, even as they work together to bring Stefan back from the edge.

Meanwhile, Elena’s younger brother Jeremy Gilbert (Steven McQueen) is being visited by ghosts from his past that have a powerful message they’re trying to deliver to him, not to mention the impact they are having on his relationship with Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham). Plus, after the emotional end of her relationship with Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig), Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola) grows closer to Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino), and a war erupts between their families.

This week, Elena and Rebekah (Claire Holt) engage in a power struggle, until Rebekah finally reveals some of her family’s ancient secrets and the violent past she shares with Klaus.

Vampire Diaries casts remaining roles

Stefan (Paul Wesley) pays a terrible personal price for his attempt to prevent a tragedy, and Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) makes a deadly mistake while trying to keep everyone safe.

More than one life hangs in the balance as the consequences of the sacrifice ritual play out to a horrifying conclusion.
