True Hollywood Story Investigates

E! – Thursday 20 November, 8.30pm

Cheerleading used to be right up there with Mom and apple pie as one of the bright and shiny aspects of American life, but some of the gloss has recently rubbed off this strange hybrid – a combination of social interaction and athletic skill with a healthy dose of seemingly wholesome sexiness thrown in. THS investigates the various ways in which cheerleading reflects society at large – from the recurring images in pop culture – in films like Bring It On, American Beauty, even Debbie Does Dallas – to the real-life stories of cheerleaders gone wild – drinking sprees, selling drugs, even cases of attempted murder.

E! – Saturday 23 August, 8.30pm

Each year, over 50,000 children are kidnapped by non-family members. 99 percent are recovered promptly, but there are a few cases each year where children are kept against their will for weeks, months, or years. In this THS Investigates, we’ll look behind the sensational headlines to understand more about these compelling mysteries. Why do these kids have chances to escape, yet choose (or do they?) to remain with their abductor? What’s it like for these children after they’ve been freed — is a “normal” life possible after the physical and psychological duress these children have suffered? And what role, if any, do the media play in helping or hurting these victims?
