Underbelly NZ: Land Of The Long Green Cloud

9:30pm – Wednesday, September 21 on TV 3

What goes up must come down, as this week’s Underbelly NZ: Land Of The Long Green Cloud season finale sees the real Mr Asia, Marty Johnstone’s (Dan Musgrove) drug empire crumbling around him when the series concludes its season on Wednesday, September 21st at 9:30pm on 3.

The pressure is mounting for Marty when this week’s Underbelly NZ: Land Of The Long Green Cloud finale sees the once almighty drug king reaching a new low after not having enough money to pay for his stuff.

“There’s an authenticity to the way the story unfolds…,” Dan Musgrove explains about the series. “It’s unpredictable and sometimes unbelievable just like real life.”

As if Marty’s money troubles weren’t enough, unbeknownst to Marty, Terry (Erroll Shand) is also starting to hatch a plan to get Andy (Thijs Morris) to lure him back to Scotland.

So what will prove to be the final nail in Marty’s drug empire coffin? Musgrove’s not saying, but he does reveal that filming the series’ final scene was something he will never forget.

“Lying on a real morgue table in the last block of shooting was pretty surreal,” he says. “Not an experience many people get to have twice.”

9:30pm – Wednesday, September 14 on TV 3

Detective Constables Ben Charlton (Jamie Irvine) and Carole Derwent (Holly Shanahan) think they are going to get a crack at Terry but he gets done on lesser charges and his possible convictions in Oz are suspended in this week’s continuation of Underbelly NZ: Land Of The Long Green Cloud, screening on Wednesday, September 14 th at 9:30pm on 3. Leading into this week’s unmissable episode, Jamie Irvine revealed how he prepared for the role of Detective Constables Ben Charlton.

“I guess the realisation that he was just a regular guy was a huge moment in his development,” Charlton says about the character. “Also when we were told that the cops were representations of those who worked on the case and not actual historical characters, it allowed me to take him where I wanted him to go.”

And just how did he do that? “The most important thing for me, working on Ben, has been trying to find how I relate to him,” Charlton continues. “I played him quite close to myself because I wanted him to be as authentic as possible.”

“There are a lot of factors, it’s a very complex thing building a character,” he adds. So how will Ben and his partner react to Terry’s new, possibly bogus, charges?

9:30pm – Wednesday, August 31 on TV 3

This week sees Marty Johnstone’s (Dan Musgrove) confidence rising to the top once again when he and Peter Miller prepare for their blue-water enterprise with the Brigadoon in Underbelly NZ: Land Of The Long Green Cloud, continuing on Wednesday, August 31 st at 9:30pm on 3. This week’s Underbelly NZ instalment clearly illustrates what Dan Musgrove describes as Marty Johnstone’s bravado. “His ability to act the part at times when he was completely out of his depth,” Musgrove explains. “And his knack for inspiring people to come around to his way of thinking – however dodgy it might be.” However, despite Marty’s less than ethical ways, Musgrove says he feels fortunate to be portraying a character seeded so deeply in New Zealand’s criminal history.

“It’s a privilege to be able to tell a story based on actual events and play a character that really existed,” he says. “There’s an authenticity to the way the story unfolds… it’s unpredictable and sometimes unbelievable just like real life.”

“And there’s a certain responsibility there as well when the person actually existed, because you are telling their story.”

Make sure not to miss the continuation of this when Underbelly NZ: Land Of The Long Green Cloud, screens on Wednesday, August 31 st at 9:30pm on 3.
