At just 42, Stephen Martin is a rising young star in the construction industry. He was recently hired to be chief executive of the Clugston Group, a major force in construction, building roads, schools and supermarkets, and still proud of its old fashioned values. But the construction industry is in crisis as a result of the recession. Hundred of companies have gone bust; nearly thirty thousand construction workers have already lost their jobs. Stephen knows that extreme times call for extreme measures, so he’s makes an extraordinary decision. He trades in his suit and expense account for a hard hat and a canteen lunch and goes undercover in his own business to find out what’s really going on. Armed with a cover story and a false identity, he works alongside his frontline workers.

He pours the concrete, works in the blast-furnaces and does the night-shifts repairing roads while searching for answers about how best to run the business. He comes face to face with the consequences of his executive decisions and hears exactly what the workforce thinks of the management – with none of them knowing he’s their boss from HQ. ‘How’s morale,’ he asks? ‘At an all time low,’ answers one of his new workmates.

After two weeks on the frontline, with a renewed understanding of the organisation and the people who work for him, he’ll reveal his true identity to his staff – and introduce some major changes. It will be a meeting they’ll never forget and that will change their lives.
