Renee Wright continues her Desert Explorer camping tour of the Australian outback on this week’s show. The Desert Explorer outback tour starts in Perth and finishes up in Alice Springs six days later. About as remote as tourists can get in Australia, the Desert Explorer four wheel drive trip takes passengers to the heart of outback Australia. The tour goes from vast golden wheat plains and mines to the Red Centre, Ayers Rock (Uluru), Kings Canyon and Alice Springs. Renee said one of the highlights of the trip was visiting Ayers Rock or Uluru. “As well as being incredibly beautiful, it just has this amazing feeling about it – something quite spiritual. We also were lucky enough to see some amazing Aboriginal art.” Tonight’s show also features Rouen in Normandy, France; Bicheno in Tasmania; the Brisbane music scene; St Patrick’s Day in Dublin; and a drive along the New South Wales South Coast.

Renee Wright samples the Australian outback on a Desert Explorer outback tour which starts in Perth and finishes up in Alice Springs six days later. Renee said she was initially a little apprehensive about the Desert Explorer trip as it involved bush camping each night. “I’m not really a roughing it kind of girl and some aspects of the trip were quite tough for me, but the scenery absolutely made up for it. It was just breath-taking.” The programme also features New York; the Greek island Rhodes; bungy-jumping in Queenstown; Lord Howe Island in Australia and Vanuatu.

Renee Wright goes sailing in the Whitsunday Islands off the coast of Queensland in Australia, on this week’s United Travel Getaway. The Whitsundays are in warm waters on the north east coast of Queensland inside the Great Barrier Reef. Now listed as a World Heritage National Park, there are over 70 islands and hundreds of anchorages and islets to explore. The mountainous islands are covered with eucalypt pine with patches of green grassland or the occasional shadowy gully of rainforest and waterfalls. The shores of the islands are skirted by fringing coral reefs making the Whitsundays a mecca for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts.

Renee went on her trip with Sunsail Australia, a charter company offering bare boat charters, luxury crewed cruises and a skippered charter boat. Renee and her team opted for the skippered charter option on a Lagoon 440 Catamaran. The boat has four double cabins and is suitable for large groups or families. Renee was joined on board by the Getaway crew and her partner Charlie Waide, who makes a cameo appearance in the item. Renee says the Whitsundays are unbelievably beautiful and charter sailing was a great option. “I learned a lot about sailing and also got to try out my newly acquired diving skills.”

This week’s episode of Getaway also features the Jack the Ripper trail in the United Kingdom; Strahan, Tasmania; Thai boxing; the new Spencer Gulf ferry in South Australia; Sejala, Mission Beach; Perth City YHA; and the Junee licorice factory in New South Wales.

Local presenter Lance Hipkins goes on the Tequila trail in Mexico, in this week’s episode of United Travel Getaway. Tequila – home of the famous drink that bears its name – is a small town 56 kilometres North-west of Guadalajara. Lance visited workers on an agave farm – the raw material Tequila is made from – as well as checking out a distillery where tequila is made.

“It was really interesting to see the production process for such a legendary drink and right there in the home town of Tequila,” said Lance. “And I had to sample some of the product too – all in the name of research of course.” Lance and his crew were in Tequila at the time of the town’s birthday celebrations so they also got to experience fiesta time in Mexico.

This week’s episode of Getaway also features Mundaka in Spain, Logandale in the Nevada Desert near Las Vegas, the annual Highland Games at Ohau north of Queenstown; and Wood Island and Magnetic Island, both in Australia.

He also tries to work out just how much of the movie Pearl Harbour was actually filmed there.

Meanwhile, the Australian team check out the American Museum of Natural History in New York, which was the setting for the film Night at the Museum. The programme also features the Piz Gloria restaurant in Murren, Switzerland, which was made famous in a James Bond film; and the Florida town of Seaside which was the town of “Seahaven” in The Truman Show. New local presenter LANCE HIPKINS gets a wet welcome to UNITED TRAVEL GETAWAY this week when he tries his hand at sea kayaking.

Lance joins RENEE WRIGHT and CLARKE GAYFORD on the New Zealand team for Getaway, but only gets as far as the Coromandel for his first story.

“I didn’t get to travel far from home for my first story, but it was a lot of fun anyway. The weather was typically New Zealand and changed dramatically overnight which presented a few challenges, but we had a great time.”

Lance is now looking forward to shooting his next two stories in the rather more exotic location of Mexico, a country he has visited before and really loves.

As a very keen traveller, Lance was thrilled to get his job on United Travel Getaway.
“It’s one of those dream jobs, isn’t it? Not one I thought too long about accepting.”

Lance has already worked as a presenter on the music channel Juice and on the TVNZ series ‘The Fence’. He also works behind-the-scenes in television as a production manager and first assistant director on dramas and commercials.

Also on this week’s United Travel Getaway: the Otago Rail Trail by bike, Santillana Del Mar in Spain; and the running of the sheep at the Boorawa Sheep Festival, Cockle Creek in Tasmania, and Queensland’s Moreton Island, all in Australia.

This week on UNITED TRAVEL GETAWAY, Kiwi presenter CLARKE GAYFORD gets to fulfil a lifelong ambition when he catches a wave in Hawaii.

Clarke is a keen surfie, so as soon as he heard there was a trip to Hawaii on the Getaway schedule, he was keen to do a story on surfing there.

“It was a fantastic experience, though to be honest our guide, pro surfer Kainoa McGee, did show my efforts up rather badly.”

Clarke also filmed a story on Pearl Harbour and what is there today, and took a look at the volcanic crater in Haleakala National Park on Maui by mountain-biking down the side of it. These other two Hawaii stories will screen on upcoming episodes of United Travel Getaway.

Also on this week’s programme: St Croix in the US Virgin Islands, the Steamboat Ski Resort in the Colorado Rockies, Fitzroy in Melbourne, Peru, the Sydney Harbour Bridge 75th birthday, and Maria Island in Tasmania.

This week on UNITED TRAVEL GETAWAY, RENEE WRIGHT goes on board the Queen Mary II – the largest cruise ship ever to visit New Zealand.

While the Queen Mary II is the world’s second biggest liner in terms of tonnage, it is the longest, tallest and widest passenger vehicle ever built. It is two-thirds the length of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and was first put to sea in 2004.

Renee says her Queen Mary II story is a real “how the other half live” kind of piece.

“Obviously buying a cruise on her is going to be well out of most people’s price range, but it was great to be able to get on board and show our viewers around via the programme,” says Renee. “It really is like another world on board. The luxury is extraordinary, and just the sheer size and volume of everything is really striking. Almost 16,000 meals are consumed on board each day.”

Also on this week’s episode of United Travel Getaway: Peru, Liverpool in England; and dolphin spotting in Jervis Bay, fishing in the Rowley Shoals, and the Paramount Adventure Centre on the Gold Coast, all in Australia.
