TVNZ goes HD!

Awesome news: TVNZ have decided to bring forward introduction of digital high definition television (HDTV) on Freeview to go live by July 2008!

In particular, the Beijing Olympics coverage on TV ONE in August next year will be in HD!

Currently no channels in New Zealand are broadcast in HD and the switch provides a marked improvement in image quality.

Well that really sucks! Why does TVNZ insist on shooting themselves in the foot by not launching new services to as many viewers as possible? I heard SKY is going HD with a few of their channels in March anyway.

I read somewhere that they won't be HD on sky sadly.

Good news! And good to hear about them using Sport Extra as a complimentary channel. Any word as to whether TVNZ will be HD on SKY?

Oooh that's really good! So really, they have 4 channels now, not 3.

Great news, I asked Rick Ellis today at the launch of TVNZ 6 about the Olympics and TVNZ Sports Extra:

TVNZ Sports Extra will be used for 24/7 coverage of the Olympics! So if there's two events going on at the same time where Kiwis are competing, we'll be able to choose which one we want to see. We'll also get heaps more coverage with two channels covering the games.

Terrestrial Freeview can hold more channels than satellite Freeview too..

This is on the TVNZ page, http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/1318241/1382873, plus more information about what percentage is going to be HDTV on TV1 and TV2

Don't forget that HD is only supported on the terrestrial network launching next year.

The existing satellite network will be SD only due to bandwidth restrictions.

Existing Freeview boxes are designed for satellite TV only.

New boxes will be out next year that support the terrestrial network. All of the official terrestrial Freeview boxes will fully support HD and MPEG-4.

Yes you need an HDTV and I think you may even need a NEW Freeview box cause I don't think the current ones were designed to carry HD images - but unsure on that

But you need a HD TV to see the changes.....right?
it will be on freeview, so if you dont have a freeview capable tv you will need a freeview set top box. the set top box should be able to output to your existing television set - you wont get HD but you will get a much better picture than what you get now.

Oh so nothing's going to change for me. good - thanks Smiling

If your TV is not HD capable you will receive the same coverage and images but at a lower quality - Standard Definition - which is what we have now.

another sports event to mark another evolution in television is this a coincidence or what?

TuiKiwi's picture

TuiKiwi

Awesome! But what happens to the TVs that aren't HD? Will the quality get worse or stay the same?
Is it going to Sky too?
